Giovanni Peri interviewed by the LA Times regarding the proposed merit-based immigration policy

Professor Giovanni Peri was recently interviewed by the Los Angeles Times regarding the Trump administration's proposal for a merit-based immigration system. This proposed system will end the decades-long policy of preferring family members of US citizens and permanent residents. Though the merit-based system was proven to work in Canada and Australia, it is not without its political landmines and administrative hurdles. Professor Peri commented, "“The truth is that the U.S. has had the highly skilled coming in, and in very large numbers, throughout its history and the last 15 years in particular.” In the long run, experts actually agree that greater immigration will provide a net economic benefit to the US.
